Do you want NYC to be “bad” again?
I’ve seen a couple of questions come up about portrayals of NYC in the movies and in some answers, people noted that the city has become so “boring” because it is safe and the clutter of tourists have added to something “lost” along with the gentrification of areas that have priced out people.
If it meant getting the “character” back of NYC, would you want it to be like how it was in the late 70s to early 90’s where murders were rampant, drugs were everywhere but people still had their communities and weren’t being pushed out by real estate developers..with less tourism because of it?? Or would you compromise…say, safe city but people still had their homes.
What’s your opinion? 10 points for the most well thought out..and yeah, even if a little of that NYC “snark” took place in it! LOL
WELL…….
Personally, i wasnt a fan of the violent NYC. That violence took the lives of two of my uncles, and one of my cousins. The murders, drugs, prostitution, racism and police brutality really f*cked up alot of lives, and im glad that that sh!t got kicked to the curb.
But on the other hand, new NYC is pretty gay, and to tell the truth, what with gentrification and all that, the lives of the NY working class hasnt necessarily gotten much better. The different ethnicities and the neighborhoods they lived in all contributed to the character of NYC. Sure, the city was dangerous, but it was still home. We had our blocks, our different friends, our community, and where we lived and grew up became part of our identities. Theres generations worth of history on every block in NYC, and the faster gentrification occurs, the faster we lose that heritage. People who been livin in the same building for 50 years are bein pushed out by sum pretentious 20 somethins from god-knows-where who call us “bitter renters” and walk around like they the sh!t. Do you know how humiliating that is, to have to live next to people who look down on you, people who want to take your home and your community?
They been targeting all the ethnic neighborhoods, theres no irish in hell’s kitchen, no italians in Little Italy and soon there will be no Blacks in Harlem or Bed-Stuy, no Greeks in Astoria, no Dominicans in the Heights and no Boricuas in el Barrio. And exactly where are we supposed to live? Screw that, we was here first and we worked hard to have whatever little we still have to our names. Why should we give up what we had for generations to placate CIty Hall, which obviously dont care about us even though we put them in power, Real Estate dvelopers we dont even know, and transplants who come here and throw us out.
People say development is good for the community….but thats bull, development aint good for us, they never tell us we wont be around long enough to enjoy it.
My grandad’s rent got raised again and pretty soon he wont have noplace to stay. I’d let him stay with me, but i cant fit him in my 1 bedroom and i dont make enough money to take over his lease. So God knows whats gonna happen now. This is the side of gentrification those yuppies dont see.
I want a safe city, a nice place to raise my kids. But gentrification aint the answer to the city’s problems.

The Real Estate Game $11.12 "The Real Estate Game" is a comprehensive guide to successful real estate investment from one of the masters in the field. Drawing upon four decades of experience developing, owning, and managing properties and on almost thirty years of teaching at the Harvard Business School, William J. Poorvu offers an insider’s perspective on how to make smart decisions about real estate. The real estate "game" is played by people, and it’s the stories of real people that make Poorvu’s introduction to the industry colorful and interesting. The reader meets players ranging from real estate moguls to small-scale developers to individual investors in exotic investment instruments. Their stories evolve throughout the book and illustrate how these people — with all their complicated needs, talents, and motives — fit into the larger process and context. In clear and nontechnical language, Poorvu explains how variables — players, properties, capital markets, and the external environment — come together to influence the shape and outcome of a real estate deal. He explains the time frame for different kinds of real estate investments and walks the reader through the key "periods of play" in the real estate game: concept, commitment, development, operation, reward, and reinvestment. "The Real Estate Game" introduces a simple but powerful "back-of-the-envelope" technique for analyzing the financial implications of a potential deal. Using this tool and others, Poorvu shows readers how to use direct investments, syndicates, and REITs to get into the real estate game across a broad range of property types: residential, office, hotel, industrial, and retail. Offering unique insight into the ways that developers and investors can create value, "The Real Estate Game" is both a perfect introduction for the novice and an invaluable overview for the experienced professional. |
