Stukk in the Burbs: A Novel of Mystery and Mortgage Payments from Prof. Richard Stukk, Suburban P.I. $24.81 Richard Stukk is a full-time English professor at the College of the Living Dead (otherwise known as Copequa Community College) and a part-time private eye. Born a curmudgeon and raised paranoid in New York City, he now finds himself with an overly needy house, an overly sensitive wife, and an overly used red pen. For extra cash, he becomes a suburban Sherlock taking on house-burgling landscapers, neighbor-shadowing neighbors, motorhead Gen-X druggies, and a corrupt county councilman who has got himself missing, if not murdered. All this, while fending off a cop brother-in-law, a petulant mower, and a hot colleague with her commas and curves in all the right places. Not to mention, working towards his ultimate goal–to bring down the mysterious and licentious Professor Rex Bonet (aka "King Bone"), the Moriarity of the English Department. Assaulted? Confused? So is he. Only you’re just reading this and he’s "Stukk in the Burbs." "Stukk in the Burbs: A Novel of Mystery and Mortgage Payments from Professor Richard Stukk, Suburban P.I." is a comedy of errors, both grammatical and criminal, in the land of dying lawns and stone dead literacy. |

Perception of Fixed Direct Payments $109.93 The 1996 Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform (FAIR) Act introduced fixed payments which unlike previous payment programs are designed to be decoupled from production decisions. In general, economists believe that fixed payments, which account for onethird of total United States government payments to farmers, are an efficient way to transfer income to targeted recipients. Further, fixed payments are believed to generate only minimal distortions in resource allocation decisions. This study, based on data from a national survey of farm households, examines how farm households allocate the proceeds from a fixed payment. In addition, it examines what factors best explain how farm households indicate that they would allocate the hypothetical payment. Results indicate that the extent to which fixed payments can be considered decoupled depends on a variety of factors that describe the farm business, operator, and household. Dividends Still Don’t Lie: The Truth About Investing in Blue Chip Stocks and Winning in the Stock Market $29.95 In 1988, Geraldine Weiss wrote the classic Dividends Don’t Lie. That book detailed the dividend-value strategy behind Investment Quality Trends, the highly successful newsletter Weiss founded and Kelley Wright now edits. Today, more than twenty years later, the investment world has changed dramatically because of computer technology and the Internet. Tremendous amounts of data and information can be gathered, sorted, and analyzed in a matter of minutes, and what used to take weeks or months at a library can now be accomplished in one evening with a computer. What hasn’t changed is the success of the dividend-value strategy for producing consistent gains in the stock market. Dividends Still Don’t Lie shows how the stock market still rewards investors who recognize and appreciate good value.Rather than emphasize price alone or a company’s sector, products, or other analytical factors, the dividend-value strategy uses dividend-yield patterns to make buying and selling decisions. In simple terms: a stock is most attractive when it offers a high-dividend yield. As investors rush in to lock down the high yield, their buying pushes the price higher. Eventually the price reaches an area where the current yield is no longer attractive and buying stops. With no new buyers to push the stock price higher, the price begins to decline—and early investors sell and take their profits. Wright shows that, by understanding the historical dividend-yield pattern of a company, you will be better informed as to whether the stock offers much value, little value, or value that’s somewhere in-between.Four plus decades of research have shown that blue chip companies, those with long records of consistent, competent performance, are far more predictable than are upstarts or less established companies with erratic records of earnings and dividend payments. In short, the dividend-value strategy is a proven, commonsense approach that has ultimately led to |

Reducing Unemployment: A Case for Government Deregulation $115 Unemployment costs the United States at least $400 billion per year in lost output. This number does not begin to add up the total costs of unemployment that include many serious social problems like increased divorce and crime rates. If unemployment costs so much, why don’t we simply pump up demand and push the unemployment rate down? The answer lies in the relationship between inflation and unemployment: we simply cannot push unemployment below the rate that is compatable with stable inflation. Must we, then, just live with unemployment? No. But to understand how we can reduce unemployment, we must understand the nonaccelerating inflation rate of unemployment (NAIRU). What determines the level of the NAIRU? Has that level increased? Can we reduce the current NAIRU? These are important questions addressed in Reducing Unemployment. Ottosen and Thompson argue that the NAIRU has increased significantly over the past 30 years. Many blame structural unemployment for that increase. Others have argued that increases in social welfare programs and payments are to blame. But hardly anyone has examined the effects of increasing government regulations on the NAIRU. Reducing Unemployment remedies this oversight, and also looks at the effects of unionization and productivity on the NAIRU. The authors conclude that the United States does not have to tolerate a high unemployment rate, for the NAIRU can be reduced through appropriate government deregulation. |
