HELL being fuppofed a Lake of real corporeal Firej as it is de- fcribed in the Scriptures, and concluded to be by the beft and molt orthodox Writers in the Catholick Church of Chrift; I have two or three Things to object againft the Opinion that it is in the Bowels of the Earth. i. The firft is, that this Hypothefis leemethto contain in it fomething contradictory to the Nature of Fire. For the due underftanding of which, it will be needful to obferve, that to the Being and Conftitution of Fire, there is required both an unftious fulphurcous Tabulum on which it feedeth, and alfb a nitrous Fewel which it receiveth fromfrom the Air; without both which it can by no means fubfift or aft. For Fire being a thin and fubtle Body, vhofe Particles are in a very vehement and rapid Motion, if the Matter, adequate to receive the Property of its Body, either confume or be fubftracled, it muft decay and languifh; or, if the rapidity of its Motion be on a fudden over-powered and flopped, it will be ftifkd and extinguifhed. In plain Terms, when the Fewel is fpent or taken away, it dies, and when the Air is wholly excluded or kept from it, ’tis put out. Behind The Scenes with The Mediums $2.99 Scanned, proofed and corrected from the original hardcover edition for enjoyable reading.***an excerpt from the beginning of the:PART II.MEDIUMISTIC READING OF SEALED WRITINGS. CHAPTER I.I HAVE decided to give to my readers (in so far as I am at liberty to do so) the methods I generally use, when reading sealed writings for a company assembled in double parlors. For a long time I had intended to guard these secrets carefully and keep them entirely for my own use, as is done by many performers. While magicians frequently publish or allow to be published many valuable secrets, yet the secrets of their very latest and best work are jealously guarded from the public. The reason for this is because if the secrets become too generally known, it lessens the value of the experiments for purposes of entertainment, by rendering them common. Consequently, from the magician’s point of view, it is regarded as out of place to allow such secrets to become public property through publication. In some instances secrets of this class are sold by certain dealers to performers, and to professional mediums, at prices that might astonish an outsider. If the secrets are regarded as exceptionally good and a high price placed upon them by the vendor, so few will buy them that the performance of the experiments The fundamental principles of these experiments are not new, but the details make them useful for practical purposes. I purchased them from dealers who place considerable value on them; as they are catalogued at prices which, for the four I am about to describe, make an aggregate of some seventy dollars. As received by me from the vendors, I found some of them impracticable until I had added certain improvements to the ideas. In the improved form I assure my readers that they are thoroughly practicable, as I have performed them some hundreds of |

Beside The Rio Hondo $22.95 How can a lone female of “a certain age” take her last stand on a stony wedge of land in the mountains of Northern New Mexico? Will she find a job, learn to chop wood, be eaten by a bear or give it up and fall in love again? “Beside the Rio Hondo” is a memoir that explores in depth Phaedra Greenwood’s connection with the natural world and simultaneous need for community. Her ex-husband gives her a year to live in the old adobe where they raised their children; then he plans to sell it so they can split the proceeds. But she wants to stay in the house forever. She has a year to come up with her own financing to buy out his half of the property or negotiate a deal with the neighbors. The house is falling apart, her money is running out and she has never applied for a loan in her life. It’s a hell of a time to decide to have an epiphany. “For over three decades I have made my home in the Taos area of Northern New Mexico,” the author says, “not just because I love the spare and dramatic landscape, but also because I am intrigued by the complex layers of history and culture. I admire the devotion of the artists and craftsmen to their work, the loving care New Mexicans bestow on their churches and the close family ties that bond them in community. As I struggle with my garden, my orchard and old adobe “casa,” I absorb with gratitude my neighbors’ rural savvy and the skills these tenacious hunters, fishermen, and ranchers have developed over the centuries to survive and thrive in the high mountain desert. Life here is hard, but often delicious. The energy, exotic flavors and bright colors of Taos are unique.” Phaedra Greenwood is a freelance writer/photographer whose poems, essays and stories have appeared in many local newspapers, magazines and anthologies. She has won numerous literary prizes including the Katherine Anne Porter Award. As a journalist and columnist for “The Taos News,” she received two first place awards in 2000 from the New Mexico Press Association for |

Excerpt: Lyab-i Hauz (from Persian: meaning: by the pond), or Lyab-i Khauz, is the name of the area surrounding one of the few remaining hauz (ponds) that have survived in the city of Bukhara. The small Qazi-e Kalyan Nasreddin madrasah (now demolished) was formerly located beside the Kukeldash madrasah. Phoenix on the portal of Nadir Divan-Beghi madrasah (part of Lyab-i Hauz complex)The history of this ensemble is closely connected with the name of Nadir Divan-Beghi, who was an important grandee, vizier, and also an uncle of the Emir of Bukhara Imam Quli Khan. It is said that when Nadir Divan-Beghi built the Khanaka which bears his name, near the site of the building there was a large holding owned by an old Jewish widow. (There was a substantial population of Bukharan Jews.) Nadir Divan-Beghi had decided that this site would be the perfect place for a pond, but the widow turned down his offer to buy the property. Then Nadir Divan-Beghi brought her before I… More: |
