Modeled on the proceedings of a 1982 wildlife symposium published by the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society, this book updates and expands the issues involved in wildlife and land use. The chapters are grouped into five sections–perspectives on Texas wildlife resources, future expectations in land use, the public and future demands for wildlife, wildlife management and research, and wildlife management on public lands. Land!: Irish Pioneers in Mexican and Revolutionary Texas $27.12 The only successful European impresarios in mid-nineteenth century Mexican Texas — men authorized to bring immigrants to settle the vast spaces of Mexico’s northern territories — were Irish. On their land grants, Irish settlers founded Refugio and San Patricio and went on to take active roles in the economic and political development of Texas. It required a hardy spirit to weather the perils that accompanied these opportunities — the long journey, shipwrecks, hostile Indians, and disease — and Irish pioneers proved fit for the task. They were not seeking relief from famine or English oppression in their own country. What they were seeking, and what they obtained, was land. Graham Davis tells this Irish-Texan story of the search for land by recounting the experiences of the original impresarios John McMullen, James McGloin, James Power, and James Hewetson, and he finishes the book with a description of the ranching empire of Power’s nephew, Thomas O’Connor. In between, he examines the marriages, commercial contacts, political alliances, and language ties that "Mexicanized" these successful entrepreneurs. Living in the heart of the war zone, some of the Irish settlers fought for independence while others remained loyal to the Mexican government that had made them citizens and given them land. Davis offers a vivid picture of the hardships of pioneer life and the building of communities, churches, and schools. He describes how Irish ranchers had the opportunity to thrive after the annexation of Texas and emphasizes their willing acceptance of Mexican ranching methods. He makes a convincing case that the Irish came to Texas not as victims but as entrepreneurs and opportunists insearch of land. |

The Blackest Land the Whitest People: Greenville, Texas $27.25 This sign was hanging on the main street intersection of downtown, from the 1920s to the late 1960s, two blocks from where I lived. My hometown is Greenville, Texas. Greenville is known throughout the nation for two things: its unique slogan, "The Blackest Land – The Whitest People" and its famous 1908 lynching. The famous sign hung on the main street between our train station and our bus station. As soldiers and civilian passengers passed through our town, it provided a very conspicuous view. This book is about what it was like being black and growing up in Greenville, Texas. It is also in remembrance of all those before us who went through struggles to help people free themselves from undesirables which had previously enslaved us. Although we obtained certain rights, I give you a background and the history of why things were the way they were. Even a more valuable history is of why things are still the way they are, especially between blacks. Is it because of a single, powerful, twisted-minded genius 292 years ago, whose theory is still a powerful affront in the black race today? My hope is to help break this chain of enslavement of blacks against blacks in my hometown. History was not always pretty; but to say, "Forget the past," is saying Black History doesn’t matter. Black history is American history, and it has been missing from the history books for a long time. My goal is not to keep bringing up the past. My goal is to include some of those that were there, and helped, endeared, molded, designed and build Greenville so that it is what it is today….. |

The Franco-Texan Land Company $39.51 The Franco-Texan Land Company was formed, ostensibly, by the French bondholders of the Memphis, El Paso, and Pacific Railroad in an attempt to salvage their investments through sale of lands in the railroad’s Texas land grant. Most of the land company’s wealth, however, went into the pockets of unscrupulous local managers and directors, and another railroad eventually built a road across Texas along the Memphis, El Paso, and Pacific right of way. Despite their unsavory histories, the land company and its railroad parent played an important part in the development of Northwest Texas. Virginia Taylor’s account of their activities furthers the study of the role of land companies in the settlement of the United States and adds interesting sidelights on one of the immigrant groups that left the imprint of Europe on frontier Texas. |

Texas Rangers $9.69 Texas writer/historian Mike Cox explores the inception and rise of the famed Texas Rangers. Starting in 1821 with just a handful of men, the Rangers’ first purpose was to keep settlers safe from the feared and gruesome Karankawa Indians, a cannibalistic tribe that wandered the Texas territory. As the influx of settlers grew, the attacks increased and it became clear that a much larger, better trained force was necessary. From their tumultuous beginning to their decades of fighting outlaws, Comanche, Mexican soldados and banditos, as well as Union soldiers, the Texas Rangers became one of the fiercest law enforcement groups in America. In a land as spread-out and sparsely populated as the west itself, the Rangers had unique law-enforcement responsibilities and challenges. The story of the Texas Rangers is as controversial as it is heroic. Often accused of vigilante-style racism and murder, they enforced the law with a heavy hand. But above all they were perhaps the defining force for the stabilization and the creation of Texas. From Stephen Austin in the early days through the Civil War, the first eighty years of the Texas Rangers is nothing less then phenomenal, and the efforts put forth in those days set the foundation for the Texas Rangers that keep Texas safe today. |

The Texas Indians $28.05 During an excavation in the 1950s, archaeologists discovered the bones of a prehistoric woman in Midland County, Texas, and dubbed her "Midland Minnie." Some believed her age to be between twenty thousand and thirty seven thousand years, making her remains the oldest ever found in the Western Hemisphere. While the accuracy of these dates remains disputed, the find, along with countless others, demonstrates the wealth of human history that is buried beneath Texas soil. By the time the Europeans arrived in Texas in 1528, Native Texas; the Karankawas and Atakapas who fished the Texas coast; the town-dwelling Jumanos along the Rio Grande; the hunting-gathering Coahuiltecans in South Texas; and the corn-growing Wichitas in the Panhandle. All of these native peoples had developed structures, traditions, governments, religions, and economies enabling them to take advantage of the land’s many resources. When the Europeans arrived, they brought horses, metal tools and weapons, new diseases and new ideas all of which began to reshape the live of Texas Indians. Over time Texas became home to horse-mounted, buffalo-hunting Apaches, Comanches, and Kiowas and a refuge for Puebloan Tiguas, Alabama-Coushattas Kickapoos, and many others. These groups traded shared ideas fought and made peace with one another as well as with people outside of Texas. This book tells the story of all of these groups, their societies and cultures, and how they changed over the years. Author David La Vere offers a complete chronological and cultural history of Texas Indians from twelve thousand years history of Texas Indians from twelve thousand years ago to the present day. He presents a unique view of their culturalhistory before and after European arrival examining Indian interactions–both peaceful and violent–with Europeans, Mexicans, Texans, Texans, and Americans. This book is the first full examination of the history of Texas Indians in more than forty years. |

Land of the Tejas: Native American Identity and Interaction in Texas, A.D. 1300 to 1700 $69.82 Combining archaeological, historical, ethnographic, and environmental data, Land of the Tejas represents a sweeping, interdisciplinary look at Texas during the late prehistoric and early historic periods. Through this revolutionary approach, John Wesley Arnn reconstructs Native identity and social structures among both mobile foragers and sedentary agriculturalists. Providing a new methodology for studying such populations, Arnn describes a complex, vast, exotic region marked by sociocultural and geographical complexity, tracing numerous distinct peoples over multiple centuries. Drawing heavily on a detailed analysis of Toyah (a Late Prehistoric II material culture), as well as early European documentary records, an investigation of the regional environment, and comparisons of these data with similar regions around the world, Land of the Tejas examines a full scope of previously overlooked details. From the enigmatic Jumano Indian leader Juan Sabata to Spanish friar Casanas’s 1691 account of the vast Native American Tejas alliance, Arnn’s study shines new light on Texas’s poorly understood past and debunks long-held misconceptions of prehistory and history while proposing a provocative new approach to the process by which we attempt to reconstruct the history of humanity. |

The Texas Navy $35.04 Most of the early settlers came by way of the sea, embarking at Mobile and New Orleans. Because of their innocence, or because of a certain love of independence, they entered through whatever ports on the Gulf seemed most expedient. The ports of entry which Mexico attempted to establish for the collection of customs duties were an early cause of friction which contributed to the Texas Revolution. And during the Revolution, the tiny Texas Navy, built around three sloops of war under Commodore Hawkins, was able to establish control of the Gulf of Mexico. These ships were the Independence, the Invincible, and the Brutus. With them Hawkins controlled the sea approaches to Texas, blocked reinforcements to Santa Anna, and contributed in large part to the many difficulties which beset the Mexican Army in its long overland march to the Alamo, Goliad, and San Jacinto Battles of 1836. So it was that Texas established a Naval tradition to stand alongside the brilliant military record achieved on land. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Author: United States Navy, States Navy/ Naval History Division, History Division Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 48 Publication Date: 2004/10/01 Language: English Dimensions: 11.00 x 8.25 x 0.09 inches |

Texas Sky $32.3 Whether it shows a summer thunderstorm rolling across the plains of the Llano Estacado or a full moon rising on a clear winter night, the sky is the most commanding presence in the Texas landscape. As Georgia O’Keeffe once wrote from Canyon to a friend, "I am loving the plains more than ever it seems– and the SKY– Anita you have never seen SKY– it is wonderful." Wyman Meinzer observes that "recording the vibrant and sometimes forbidding nature of the sky has been one of the most enjoyable photographic endeavors of my career." The one hundred breathtaking color images in this book reveal the beauty, drama, unpredictability, and sheer expanse of Texas’ sky. Meinzer observes the sky from first light to the star trails in a night exposure. He presents the full palette of sunrise and sunset hues, the endless variety of cloud formations, and the cobalt blue of the sky after a winter norther. Most of all, he captures the feelings of freedom and power that so many people experience under the Texas sky. In a beautifully written essay, John Graves connects Meinzer’s photos to the land and the people of Texas. Meinzer’s preface describes the careful planning and lucky chances that yielded many of these photographs, while interspersed among them are quotes from Texas skywatchers past and present. Taken together, the stunning images and eloquent words say all there is to say about the Texas sky. |

Texas Politics and Greed $20.24 In late 1954 Texas was rocked by a scandal in its $100 million Veterans’ Land Program that included attempted murder, bribery, and political intrigue. A West Texas attorney named Sam McCollum III was gravely injured when he turned the ignition key on his car and five sticks of dynamite planted under the hood exploded, rocking the town and leaving the attorney near death with maimed legs and unable to testify at the trials. Another witness was threatened and his house was burned. Texas Ranger and DPS investigations were derailed, and State Senators were involved in the bribery and fraud. The scandal occupied Texas and National news reports for more than three years. Two hundred and fifty indictments were returned against prominent land promoters and dealers in nine counties. Several high profile trials were conducted, resulting in prison sentences for the Texas Land Commissioner and two land promoters. The book includes trial transcripts and personal interviews with participants, including attorney Sam McCollum III. As a result of the scandal, Attorney General John Ben Sheppard and Governor Allan Shivers were forced to retire from politics. Ross McSwain, a retired journalist and investigative reporter, and Harold Byler, an experienced author, have collaborated on the research and writing of this book. Both grew up in Brady, Texas, a focal point of the scandal, and both knew many of the participants personally. |

Texas Rivers $36.28 In Goodbye to a River, John Graves defined what it means to know a river– as a real place, as a landscape of memory and imagination, and as "a piece of country, that] hunted and fished and roamed over, felt and remembered, can be company enough." Readers who’ve taken the canoe trip down the Brazos with him have long wished to travel other rivers with John Graves. Those journeys now begin in Texas Rivers. This book marries the work of two Texas legends. John Graves brings to Texas Rivers his ability to weave history, geography, and culture into a vibrant portrait of a land and its people. Through photographs of rare beauty, Wyman Meinzer reveals the rivers as few will ever see them in person, distilling decades of experience in capturing light on film into a tour de force presentation of Texas landscapes. In essays on the Canadian, Pecos, Llano, Clear Fork of the Brazos, Neches, and Sabinal rivers, Graves captures the essence of what makes each river unique. While the Canadian is a river of the plains that runs through big ranch country, the Neches is a forest stream heavily impacted by human encroachment. The Llano and the Sabinal remain largely unspoiled, though the forces of change ebb and flow about them. The Pecos shows ripples of its Old West heritage, while the Clear Fork of the Brazos flows through country still living in those times. Meinzer’s photographs offer a stunning visual counterpoint to Graves’s word portraits, and, together, they show clearly that rivers have been central to the development of the unique character of Texas. |

The Book of Texas $38.18 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER I UNDER SPAIN AND FRANCE "By various influences and agents the Past is summoned before us, more vivid than a dream. The process seems as magical as those whereof we read in fairy legends, where circles are drawn, wands waved, mystic syllables pronounced. Adjured by these rites, voices speak, or forms and faces shape themselves from nothing. So, through certain influences not magical at all, our brains are made to flash with visions of other days."?Owen Witter. ONE hundred years ago there was scarcely a handful of white men in that section of North America now known as Texas, and these were not permanent settlers. The entire region was virgin soil populated only by Indians and a few Spanish soldiers, and overrun by wild cattle, mustang ponies, countless herds of buffalo, deer, antelope, wolves, and other wild animals. The passage of a century has converted the vast region west of the Mississippi into states, Texas alone containing four and a half millions of people and seven billions of wealth. To describe the raw material, the people, and the land; to picture the transformation that has been wrought in Texas during this time, particularly in its important and dramatic aspects; to trace, however inadequately, in small compass the result of the action of the people upon the land and its resources, and the results of the action of the people upon themselves until they have won some individuality and definable characteristics, is what the writers of this volume have undertaken. It is the old and well-known story of man either conquering or adapting himself to the forces of nature. Conventional history is too often inclined to concern itself mainly with dates, wars, and with the names and careers of military and political leaders, together with incidents which have … |

Vines’ monumental Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines of the Southwest (University of Texas Press, Trees of Central Texas combines the essential detail of the larger work with the ease and convenience of a field guide. It joins in print two additional field guides by Robert Vines, both published by the University of Texas Press: Trees of East Texas and Trees of North Texas. |

Generations on the Land: A Conservation Legacy $22.42 To keep the land in the family . . . To operate the land profitably . . . To leave the land better than they found it . . . Each year, Sand County Foundation’s prestigious Leopold Conservation Award recognizes families for leadership in voluntary conservation and ethical land management. In "Generations on the Land: A Conservation Legacy," veteran author and journalist Joe Nick Patoski visits eight of the award-winning families, presenting warm, heartfelt conversations about the families, their beloved land, and a vision for a healthier world. "Generations on the Land" celebrates these families’ roles as conservation leaders for the nation–far beyond the agricultural communities where they live–and reinforces the value of trans-generational family commitment to good land stewardship. The eight landowners profiled by Patoski include six ranchers, a forester, and a vintner. They reside across the country: in California, Nebraska, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Their conservation accomplishments range from providing a habitat corridor for pronghorn antelope to hammering out an endangered species "safe harbor" agreement for grape growers. A short introduction by a fellow conservation or ranching professional precedes each of the personal portraits by Patoski, which are written in an informal, conversational style. Brent Haglund, president of the Sand County Foundation, provides an introduction to the purpose and work of the foundation, and a conclusion summarizes the substantive conservation contributions of the Leopold award winners. With more and more attention being focused on the tensions between the agricultural and economic potential of land and the preservation of the natural environment, a better understanding of sustainable agriculture is becoming increasingly vital. By showcasing the leadership of these Leopold Conservation Award winners, "Generations on the Land "will inspire a whole new cadre of landowners to build a lasting heritage of conservation and sustainable land use–benefitting the earth and its inhabitants for decades to come. "Paper used in printing this book was provided by Mixed Sources: materials manufactured under certification by the Forest Stewardship Council." "In 1939, Aldo Leopold wrote ‘When land does well for its owner, and the owner does well for his land, when both end up better by reason of this partnership, we have conservation.’ "Generations on the Land" demonstrates this simple yet powerful concept through a series of inspirational and instructional essays drawn from hardworking landowners from across the nation. Whether you manage a working landscape yourself, or are one of the urban many seeking insights into how humanity can achieve a sustainable future, you need to study this book."–Richard C. Bartlett, Thinking Like a Mountain Foundation |

Spanish Texas, 1519-1821 $3.94 ., ." the book on early Texas…. It] is without peer." — David J. Weber, Robert and Nancy Dedman Professor of History, Southern Methodist University Modern Texas, like Mexico to the south, traces its beginning to sixteenth-century encounters between Spaniards, Native American peoples, and a vast land unexplored by Europeans. Unlike Mexico, however, Texas eventually received the stamp of Anglo-American culture, so that Spanish contributions to present-day Texas tend to be obscured or even unknown. In this pathfinding study, Donald E. Chipman draws on archival and secondary sources to write the story of Spain’s three-hundred-year presence and continuing influence in the land that has become Texas. Chipman begins with the first European sighting of Texas shores in 1519. He goes on to chronicle the exploits of Cabeza de Vaca, Francisco Va zquez de Coronado, Luis Moscoso and other sixteenth-century explorers, before devoting extensive attention to the eighteenth century, a time of active Spanish colonization. Although Mexican independence ended the Spanish era in 1821, Chipman finds that Spain has left a substantial legacy in modern Texas. Spanish precedents have shaped modern Texas law in the areas of judicial procedure, land and water law, and family law. Spanish influences abound in Texas art, architecture, music, and theater, not to mention the widely spoken Spanish language. And the Roman Catholic religion introduced by the Spaniards continues to have many adherents in Texas. In short, the rich history of Spain in Texas deserves to be widely known by "Texana buffs" and professional historians alike, and Spanish Texas, 1519-1821 is the one-volume source toconsult. |

Excerpt: Spanish Texas was one of the interior provinces of New Spain from 1690 until 1821. Although Spain nominally claimed ownership of the territory, which comprised part of modern-day Texas, including the land north of the Medina and Nueces Rivers, the Spanish did not attempt to colonize the area until after discovering evidence of the failed French colony of Fort Saint Louis in 1689. In 1690, Alonso De León escorted several Catholic missionaries to East Texas, where they established the first mission in Texas. When native tribes resisted the Spanish presence, the missionaries returned to Mexico, abandoning Texas for the next two decades. The Spanish returned to East Texas in 1716, establishing several missions and a presidio to maintain a buffer between Spanish Territory and the French territory of Louisiana. Two years later, the first civilian settlement in Texas, San Antonio, was established as a way station between the missions and the nearest existing Spanish settlement. The new town quickly became a target for raids by the Lipan Apache. The raids continued periodically for almost three decades, until in 1749 the Spanish and the Apache made peace. The peace treaty angered the enemies of the Apache and resulted in raids on Spanish settlements by the Comanche, Tonkawa, and Hasinai tribes. Fear of Indian attacks and remoteness from the rest of the viceroyalty discouraged settlers from moving to Texas, and it remained one of the least populated provinces of New Spain. The threat of Indian attacks did not decrease until 1785, when Spain reached a peace agreement with the Comanche, who later assisted in defeating the Lipan Apache and Karankawa tribes which had continued to cause difficulties for Spanish settlers. An increase in the number of missi… More: |

Chapters: Lewis and Clark Expedition, Timeline of United States History, Great Falls, Oregon Pioneer History, Burr Conspiracy, William Dunbar, Pike Expedition, Malta War. Excerpt: The Burr conspiracy in the beginning of the 1800s was a suspected treasonous cabal of planters , politicians , and army officers led by former U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr . According to the accusations against him, Burrs goal was to create an independent nation in the center of North America and/or the Southwest and parts of Mexico . Burrs explanation: To take possession of, and farm, 40,000 acres (160 km²) in the Texas Territory leased to him by the Spanish . When the expected war with Spain broke out, he would fight with his armed “farmers,” to seize some lands he could conquer in the warall illegal by rules of warfare .Jefferson and others had Burr arrested and indicted for treason with no firm evidence put forward. Burrs true intentions are still considered ambiguous to some historians, who claim he intended to take parts of Texas and some or all of the Louisiana Purchase for himself. They claim Burr envisioned a new empire in the West over which he would rule. This historically unproven version of a conspiracy by Burr to take American land is still in print in many biographies, encyclopedias, and even history books. Letters written to this version can be found in letters by contemporaries who distrusted Burr, but no solid evidence can be found.James Wilkinson General James Wilkinson was one of Burrs most important co-conspirators. Though it was eventually discovered that his involvement in the conspiracy was most likely an attempt to further his own personal and political goals, he worked closely with Burr to develop a plan for secession. Excerpt: Map showing results of the Adams Onís Treaty. The Adams Onís Treaty of 1819, also known as the Transcontinental Treaty of 1819 , settled a border dispute in North America between the United States and Spain . The treaty was the result of increasing tensions between the U.S. and Spain regarding territorial rights at a time of weakened Spanish power in the New World . In addition to ceding Florida to the United States, the treaty settled a boundary dispute along the Sabine River in Texas and firmly established the boundary of U.S. territory and claims through the Rocky Mountains and west to the Pacific Ocean in exchange for the U.S. paying residents’ claims against the Spanish government up to a total of $5,000,000 and relinquishing its own claims on parts of Texas west of the Sabine River and other Spanish areas under the terms of the Louisiana Purchase .History East and West Florida. The treaty was negotiated by John Quincy Adams , the Secretary of State under U.S. President James Monroe , and the Spanish foreign minister Luis de Onís .Spain’s Colonies Spain had long rejected repeated American efforts to purchase Florida. But by 1818, Spain was facing a troubling colonial situation where the cession of Florida made sense. Spain had been exhausted by the Peninsular War and needed to rebuild its credibility and presence in its colonies. Revolutionaries in Central and South America were beginning to demand independence. Spain was also unwilling to make any further investment in Florida and it worried about the border between its colony of Mexico and the United States. Spain had |

Segui, Treaty of the Cedars, Saugeen Tract Agreement, Tithe Bill. Excerpt: The Specie Circular (Coinage Act ) was an executive order issued by U.S. President Andrew Jackson in 1836 and carried out by President Martin Van Buren . It required payment for government land to be in gold and silver . History The Act was a reaction to the growing concerns about excessive speculations of land after the Indian removal , which was mostly done with soft currency . The sale of public lands increased five times between 1834 and 1836. Speculators paid for these purchases with depreciating paper money. While government law already demanded that land purchases be completed with specie or paper notes from specie-backed banks, a large portion of buyers used paper money from state banks not backed by hard money. Executive order On July 11, 1836, Jackson ordered Secretary of the Treasury Levi Woodbury to issue the Specie Circular. After August 15, the government refused to take anything but gold and silver specie in exchange for public lands. It did make a special exception to also accept certain types of Virginia scrip . The executive order did allow for legitimate settlers (non-speculators) to use paper until December. Consequences As one of Jackson’s last acts in office, the consequences of the executive order fell mostly on his successor Martin Van Buren . The devaluation of paper currency only increased with Jackson’s proclamation. This sent inflation and prices upwards. Many at the time blamed the Specie Circular for the rise in |

Excerpt: Arkansas ( ) is a state located in the southern region of the United States. Its name is an Algonquin name of the Quapaw Indians. Arkansas shares a border with six states, with its eastern border largely defined by the Mississippi River. Its diverse geography ranges from the mountainous regions of the Ozarks and the Ouachita Mountains, which make up the U.S. Interior Highlands, to the eastern lowlands along the Mississippi River. The capital and most populous city is Little Rock, located in the central portion of the state. The name “Arkansas” derives from the same root as the name for the state of Kansas. The Kansas tribe of Native Americans are closely associated with the Sioux tribes of the Great Plains. The word “Arkansas” itself is a French pronunciation (“Arcansas”) of a Quapaw (a related “Kaw” tribe) word “akakaze” meaning “land of downriver people” or the Sioux word “Akakaze” meaning “people of the south wind”. The pronunciation of Arkansas was made official by an act of the state legislature in 1881, after a dispute between the two U.S. Senators from Arkansas. One wanted to pronounce the name and the other wanted . In 2007, the state legislature officially declared the possessive form of the state’s name to be Arkansas’s. View fr… More: |

Excerpt: Texas () is the second-largest U.S. state by both area and population, and the largest state in the contiguous United States. The name, meaning “friends” or “allies” in Caddo, was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in East Texas. Located in the South Central United States, Texas is bordered by Mexico to the south, New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km), and a growing population of 24.7 million residents. Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while San Antonio is the second largest in the state and seventh largest in the United States. DallasFort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and sixth largest United States metropolitan areas, respectively. Other major cities include Dallas, El Paso, and Austinthe state capital. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as an independent republic and as a reminder of the state’s struggle for independence from Mexico. The “Lone Star” can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today. Due to its size and geologic features such as the Balcones Fault, Texas contains diverse landscapes that resemble both the American South and Southwest. Although Texas is popularly associated with the Southwestern deserts, less than 10% of the land area is desert. Most of the population centers are located in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and the coastline. Traveling from east to west, one can observe terrain that ranges from coastal swamps and piney woods, to rolling plains and rugged hills, and finally the desert and mountains of the Big Bend. Excerpt: The Treaty of Ciudad Juárez was a peace treaty signed between the then President of Mexico, Porfirio Díaz, and the revolutionary Francisco Madero on May 21, 1911. The treaty put an end to the fighting between forces supporting Madero and those of Díaz and thus concluded the initial phase of the Mexican revolution. The treaty stipulated that Díaz, as well as his vice president Ramón Corral, were to step down by the end of May, and that he was to be replaced by Francisco León de la Barra as interim president until elections could be held. As a result Díaz left Mexico for exile in France. Significantly, the treaty did not mention or institute any social reforms that Madero had vaguely promised on previous occasions. It also left the Porfirian state essentially intact. Additionally, Madero supported the unpopular idea that all land disputes were to be settled through the courts, staffed by the old judges, which led to break outs of sporadic violence, particularly in rural areas. On June 7, 1911, Madero entered Mexico City and in October of 1911 he was elected as president, along with José María Pino Suárez, his running mate, as vice-president. The rebellion against the government of Porfirio Diaz broke out in late 1910, after Diaz had his rival Francisco Madero imprisoned and had announced his own victory in a falsified election. Madero’s earlier vague promises of agrarian reforms had attracted many supporters. He himself escaped from prison and fled to San Antonio, Texas, from where he issued his famous Plan of San Luis Potosí. This manifesto called for a violent overthrow of the Porfiriato and establishment of free and democratic elections. As a response to Madero’s proclamation, armed uprisings began |

31 by Lawrence Clayton $30.75 Historian David Coffey wrote that the late Texas folklorist and historian Lawrence Clayton found beauty where many might see only mesquite and limestone; he found humor in unlikely places, and he found nobility in the hard lives of cowboys and the roughnecks. For years, Dr. Clayton chronicled the history of the Clear Fork Country — the stretch of land cut by the Clear Fork of the Brazos River — of Shackelford and Throckmorton counties. His thoughtful prose on the region’s colorful past and its equally colorful characters has appeared in dozens of publications over the years. His efforts to record the stories of area ranches and the men who built them and worked them represent a major contribution to the state’s recorded history. Indeed, few writers could capture in words the ranch life of West Texas the way Lawrence Clayton did — fewer still might bother to translate the nomenclature and nuances of a working ranch to underexposed readers of all backgrounds. Unfortunately, much of Clayton’s work resided in scholarly journals or magazines not easily accessible to a wider audience. But these stories and others long unpublished belonged in books to be passed down through generations. Before his death in December of 2000, Dr. Clayton worked diligently to see that this history — these unique tales — remained available to all who are interested (and to some who don’t yet know it). This volume goes a long way toward honoring his wishes, and we are all better off for it. |
